Pills could work better than surgery for back pain sufferers

Updated:

London, England- Doctors call for a radical rethink on treatments for back pain.

New research indicates up to 40-percent of chronic lower back pain is caused by a bacterial infections, something the results show can be cured with pills instead of surgery.

Researchers in Denmark say 80 percent of patients improved significantly after a hundred day course of anti-biotics.

Susan Bradey, a patient who suffers with back problems, says taking medication is helping her.

"I'd done through so much with my back, found it very sort of debilitating. And it really condenses your life. So when someone says use antibiotics for 100 days and it will get rid of the infection, hence the back pain will start to go and it will also help the sciatica - I thought it was too good to be true" said Bradley.

Some doctors at the University of Cambridge in England are skeptical about even wider use of anti-biotics, since their effectiveness has decreased in recent years as bacteria becomes increasingly resistant to medication.
