Stadium groundbreaking brings boost to UNO baseball

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Former University of New Orleans baseball coach Ron Maestri says groundbreaking for a new stadium symbolizes an end to the uncertainty that has been a drag on the once-proud program.

Maestri joined UNO President Peter Fos, Athletic Director Derek Morel, current baseball coach Bruce Peddie and others for a ceremonial shovel turn Friday at the site of what will be a rebuilt infield grandstand.

UNO has been to 14 NCAA baseball tournaments - including the 1984 College World Series. But the future of the program was in doubt in 2010, when the school announced since-abandoned plans to downgrade its sports teams to Division III.

Fos and Morel say UNO is committed to Division I again.

Peddie says that promise - along with a new stadium - helps with recruiting.
