New Orleans, La. -

Traffic Court Judge Ronald Sholes is stepping down after 15 years on the bench.

In a letter to the Secretary of State's office, the 61-year-old Sholes says he is resigning, effective July 31. The judge says in an email to FOX 8 that he is retiring from the bench and returning to private practice.

His courtroom has been at the center of controversy over the years.

In 2005, his minute clerk was indicted in an alleged ticket-fixing scheme.  In 2007, Sholes' niece and another woman, who both worked at traffic court, pled guilty to embezzling money from the court.

Sholes' term would have expired in December of 2014.  An election to fill the rest of his term has not been scheduled yet.
