Saints make some roster moves

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up their rookie mini-camp this past weekend at their Metairie practice facilities, and signed all five of their rookie draft choices by the end of business Monday evening.

The first official OTA's will run from May 21 through May 23.  The next session runs from May 28 through May 30, with the final session going from June 10 through June 13. Mandatory mini-camp takes places June 4 through June 6 -- all hands on deck for that one.

There were signings over the weekend. Massive nose tackle John Jenkins became the fifth and final Saints draft pick to sign his deal Friday.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has also signed a half-dozen other players who got tryouts at rookie camp, including ULM product Brent Leonard.  Leonard is the school's all-time leading receiver.

Among the other signees were defensive end Baraka Atkins, who played parts of two seasons with Seattle since being drafted in 2007.

Defensive back Corey Lindsay has had cups of coffee with five different teams since being drafted by the Bengals in '07.

Jeremiah Walker was a New England practice squadder last year. Kicker Jose Maltos and running back Khiry Robinson are true rookies.

The Saints also have waived three players: ex-West Virginia running back Shawne Alston, former Utah cornerback Ryan Lacy, and 2012 practice squad center Ryan Lee.

We’ve reached the sweet spot in the NFL offseason where free agency has cooled off and the draft is still a few weeks away. A potential Malcolm Butler trade with the Patriots could alter the Saints draft plans significantly. For now, they still hold seven picks and have several options. 1st round (11TH) Derek Barnett, DE Tennessee Edge pass rusher still remains the biggest need for the Saints even with the addition of Alex Okafor, who is on a one-year deal.  Barnett&rsqu...more>>
