New Orleans, La.- Chances are a man didn't realize a patrol car was stopped at an intersection less than a block away when police say he fired an AK-47 from the porch of a house in the 3700 block of Monroe Street.

Wednesday afternoon, 2nd District Officer John Castelin was at Monroe and Stroelitz when he spotted Kendell Gibson fire the gun. Afraid for the safety of bystanders, police say Castelin got out of his car and caught Gibson as he tried to run back into the house.

When officers went inside to secure the weapon, they say they also found narcotics, paraphernalia and several hundred dollars in cash. Investigators say Gibson's intended target was not hit.

Police booked Gibson with aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, illegal discharge of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance.
