Updated:

FOX 8 received this news release from the New Orleans Fire Dept. Friday evening:

On Friday, May 17, 2013 at 2:45 pm, the New Orleans Fire Department received a call from the University of New Orleans Campus Police Department. A vial containing a mixture of undetermined acids had a buildup of gases and exploded. The lab is on the third floor of the Chemistry Science building and the vial was in a cabinet designed for such an incident.  One student was on the other side of the lab at the time of the incident and was not injured.

A few other students were evacuated from the third floor until the incident was cleared. The cabinet doors were damaged and several unmarked vials were broken. At 3:00 pm., the incident was moved to a Level 1 incident. The NOFD's Hazardous Materials Unit conducted air quality tests and also tested all of the spilled liquids which came back as mild to medium strength acids with no other dangers present.  The cleanup crew, OMI is under contract with UNO and was notified.
