Group begins process to recall St. Tammany Parish Coroner

Updated:

St. Tammany -- The battle to recall St. Tammany Parish Coroner, Dr. Peter Galvan is heating up in a major way.

The recall started this morning as nearly 100 people signed a recall petition.

A group of St. Tammany residents stand united as citizens to remove Galvan from office.

"When it comes to the abuse of tax payers money, we are the people that have the power to say we voted you in and we will vote you out," says Belinda Parker-Brown of the Louisiana International Force for Justice.

Rick Franzo, President of the Group Concerned Citizens of St. Tammany is leading the battle to recall Galvan.

"You have a parish president, you have a parish council that has asked for his resignation you have a Federal investigation that's going on. You have the legislative audit from Baton Rouge as well," says Franzo.

The recall effort follows a series of Fox 8 Lee Zurik investigations, detailing allegations of payroll abuse, misspent public tax dollars, and cashed-out unused vacation time, even though Facebook photos clearly showed the coroner was out of the country.

"We were outraged at the blatant disregard of tax payers money that you would paste it on Facebook, we were outraged and we're still outraged," says Parker-Brown.

Concerned citizens of St. Tammany have 100 volunteers to help collect voters signatures.

The clock is ticking to collect the 53,000 signatures required for a recall.

"So we have six months to accomplish this," says Kort Hutchinson.

There are approximately 25 sites where voters can sign the recall petition.

The sites will begin opening this week with hours of operation from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

"And as each week goes on we're going to be adding more locations," says Franzo.

"It's not about Republican or Democrat, black or white it's about people's rights," says Parker-Brown.
