Teen sets house on fire while playing with lighter


New Orleans, La - Members of the New Orleans Fire Department responded to a house fire that was set by a teen who was playing with a lighter. The incident occurred Saturday at 4:37 p.m. in the 3700 block of North Robertson.

An NOFD spokesperson says that the teen called the fire department from the bathroom, stating that his room was on fire. Firefighters arrived on seen shortly thereafter to find heavy smoke coming from the home. As firefighters made entry into the home, the teen continued to call the fire department, this time saying that he was trapped in the kitchen. Fire crews removed bars from the window and were able to rescue the boy.

The side of the single-story, shotgun home where the fire was started, was completely destroyed. The neighboring address only sustained smoke and water damage. EMS crews checked on the teen and released him on the scene. The family was displaced and is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The NOPD and New Orleans Emergency Medical Services and Entergy also assisted in the mitigation of the incident.
