Slidell, La. - Two Slidell police officers have been released from the hospital Thursday after sustaining injuries stemming from a vehicle chase, according to the Slidell Police Department.
A police spokesman says around 3:30am, officers were patrolling the west-side of Slidell when they observed a suspicious vehicle turn into a neighborhood.
The vehicle, a grey 2004 Dodge Intrepid, had a burnt out head light and did not have a license plate.
The officers conducted a traffic stop on North Carnation Street, and the vehicle initially started to stop. For unknown reasons, the driver, 28 year-old Benjamin Bernard, decided to flee from the officers.
The officers, who were driving a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, began to chase Bernard. During the pursuit, the police vehicle left the roadway, struck a cement culvert, and flipped over.
Bernard initially got away, but after hearing the description of the fleeing vehicle, another Slidell Police officer recognized the 2004 Dodge Intrepid from a previous traffic stop last Monday. In less than two hours, Bernard was in custody and was charged with Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Hit and Run, and Failure to have Two Headlights.
