11-year-old drowns while visiting family in Houma

Houma, La. - An 11-year-old boy drowned over the weekend while swimming with his family at an apartment complex, according to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office.

A police spokesman says around 7pm Saturday, deputies were called out to 273 Monarch Dr. Houma at the Chateau Creole Apartments.

Deputies arrived at the scene and were informed that an 11-year-old boy was pulled from the bottom of the swimming pool. The victim was lying on his back unresponsive on the deck of the pool.

The child, identified as 11-year-old Al James, was visiting with his family and was one of many children in the pool during the time of the incident.

Bayou Cane Fire Department first responders and Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene as well. CPR was administered in an attempt to revive him.

The victim was taken to the Terrebonne General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office performed an autopsy and the cause of death was ruled an accidental drowning.
