Intoxicated pair arrested for allowing a 10-year-old to drive

New Orleans, La. - Kenner police arrested two women for allowing a 10-year-old boy to drive. Brenda Byrd, 54, and Sheila Joiner, 48, were taken into custody early Wednesday morning.

According to police, a call came into to the Kenner Police Department, reporting that someone was recklessly driving a vehicle westbound on I-10 in Kenner at a very low rate of speed. Responding officers were able to stop the Chevrolet Tahoe SUV in the 1300 block of 31st Street. As officers approached the vehicle, they noticed that the driver was a young child. Officers also noticed Byrd and Joiner as well as a 15-year-old boy inside the vehicle.

While questioning Byrd and Joiner, officers noticed that both ladies were intoxicated. Both admitted to instructing the 10-year-old to drive because they were intoxicated. It was also determined that the child that was driving is Byrd's grandson.

Both Byrd and Joiner were taken into custody and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle. The children were placed in protective custody and later released to family members. Byrd and Joiner have been transported to Jefferson Parish Jail.
