Mass celebrates life of Fr. Michael Jacques

NEW ORLEANS, La. - A funeral was held Saturday for the beloved pastor of St. Peter Claver church.

Father Michael P. Jacques was celebrated in a Mass at the Treme church by Archbishop Gregory Aymond. Jacques died June 6 of a heart attack. He was 64.

Jacques was born in Caribou, Maine in 1949. He earned degrees in social work at Trinity College and St. Michael's College in Burlington, Vermont before entering the Edmundite seminary in Toronto. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1982. 

He served as administrator at Immaculate Heart in Williston, Vermont, and as associate pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Mobile before coming to New Orleans in 1984.  He was named associate pastor of St. Peter Claver in 1984 and assigned as pastor in May 1985. 

In addition to his ministry, Jacques served on the Archdiocesan School Board, Dean of the Cathedral Deanery, and College of Consultors. 

Jacques is survived by one brother and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be buried Monday in Selma, Alabama.
