Lou Gehrig's disease clinic at LSU in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Muscular Dystrophy Association has designated the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine as Louisiana's first specialized MDA clinic for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The association operates 200 medical clinics across the county. LSU's is the 44th specifically to study ALS and care for people who have it. Dr. Amparo Gutierrez is director of the New Orleans clinic, which opened in late May.

He says the designation will let the clinic provide specialty care to patients in Louisiana and other southeastern states. As part of the network of clinics, LSU's will participate in studies of potential new treatments.

Gutierrez is an associate professor of clinical neurology and director of the Neurology Residence Program at LSU's medical school.
