Mass commemorates victims of Upstairs Lounge fire

New Orleans, La. - A Mass was held today to remember the 32 people who died in a French Quarter fire almost 40 years ago.

On June 24, 1973, a fire was set at the bottom of a staircase leading to the Upstairs Lounge, formerly at 141 Chartres St. Because the bar was a gay bar, the fire received scant attention from public officials or the media, according to a news release from the Rev. Richard Easterling of St. George's Episcopal Church.

FOX 8 will have more on today's Mass tonight at 9 and 10 p.m.
