Cause unknown for blast at Williams plant in Geismar

Updated:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Williams Companies Inc. says it has found the location of a blast that killed two people and injured about 70 at a chemical plant in Louisiana, but the cause of the explosion remains unknown.

The company said Monday that the June 13 explosion at its plant in Geismar was centered in an area of the plant where polymers are made.

The Tulsa World reports one contract worker remains hospitalized and that no Williams employees are currently receiving hospital treatment.

Williams says Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors and members of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board are on site and still working to determine a cause.

The plant was undergoing a $350 million expansion at the time of the blast.

The facility produced polymer-grade propylene and ethylene.
