NOPD Sergeant dismissed for alleged payroll fraud

FOX 8 received the following news release Thursday afternoon from the New Orleans Police Department:

A New Orleans Police sergeant was dismissed from duty yesterday (Wednesday) after a lengthy undercover Public Integrity Bureau (PIB) investigation revealed he had committed payroll fraud, as well as violated other departmental policies.

In an administrative hearing held by Deputy Superintendent Kirk Bouyelas, it was determined that John Hunter violated 4 counts of the Performance of Duty policy by not devoting entire time to duty, 3 counts of ceasing to perform before the end of his period of duty, 3 counts of leaving the city while on duty and four counts of Public Payroll Fraud.  After a review of information collected during the PIB investigation as well as testimony provided at yesterday's hearing, Chief Bouyelas determined that the violations were sustained.  The sustained payroll fraud counts carry the sanction of dismissal from the department.

John Hunter joined the NOPD 15 years ago.  He was most recently assigned to the Eighth District.
