After Further Review: Demps helps Pelicans and his own future with trade

The Pelicans got better in the 2013 NBA Draft. It's as simple as that.

Bringing in Jrue Holiday improves the Pelicans more than drafting Nerlens Noel.

I'll get into the details of the trade and why it works basketball-wise in another post. But for now, I want to take into account another factor.

Holiday is an All-Star in his prime. Noel is an injured 19 year-old that won't see the court until late December and will still need a lot of time to develop after that.

And there in lies the deeper issue as to one reason why this trade was made. It's an issue that I'm surprised people are missing.

It's actually pretty simple. Demps MAY NOT be here to develop Noel!

I can't understand why everyone assumes Demps has anything past this season guaranteed to him.

The circumstances Demps inherited were tough. But this is a tough business and facts are facts. This roster is 100% his. He made all the moves to get them to this point. So far, they've responded with 21 and 27 wins, respectively.

Another project, particularly one that will miss at least the first quarter of the season, could mean another sub-30 win season next year.

Would anyone feel confident in their job as an NBA general manager with that kind of résumé' over three consecutive seasons?

I wouldn't. (And please spare me the ‘he just signed an extension' argument)

Demps shouldn't either. I've got to believe that at least played some part in this deal. He couldn't roll the dice on potential. He had to place the safer bet with proven production and in the process got the best possible scenario. Holiday gives them a player that can both contribute now and be a building block for the future.

Will his addition and some other pieces put the Pelicans in the playoffs next year? I don't know. But I'm much more confident in that scenario than one with Noel, certainly for next year.

The only year Demps knows for sure he will have.

Dell Demps made the absolute best move for the Pelicans franchise on draft night. He also made the best possible move for Dell Demps and his own future as general manager of this team.
