Coast Guard urges safe boating during holiday weekend

Metairie -- The U.S. Coast Guard is putting out an early warning to boaters, if you drink while operating a boat, they will find you.

Families pack the Bonnabel boat launch ready to set sail.

"We're tubing, going to go wake boarding, it's going to be awesome," says boater, Miles Flores.

"We're just going out for a little bit just riding the lake, enjoying the weather today," says Boater, Victor Rodriguez.

This weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard launched Operation Dry Water, where federal, state, and local maritime agencies take to the water to educate boaters about water safety.

Operating a recreational vessel with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher is against federal and most state laws.

As the Fourth of July Holiday weekend inches closer, Coast Guard crews will be looking for anyone drinking and driving a boat.

"It's a 72-hours of intensive marine patrol on the part of the federal state and local agencies. The effects of wind, vibration, these are all amplifiers for the effects of alcohol on your body," says Ed Huntsman of the 8th District U.S. Coast Guard.
