St. Tammany inmate who attempted suicide taken off life support

Updated:

FOX 8 received this news release from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon:

A woman who attempted suicide in the St. Tammany Parish Jail Friday night was taken off life support today in a local hospital at the request of her family.

The woman, who lived in Lacombe, was in the process of being booked for contempt of court (failure to pay court costs) in connection with a 2009 second degree battery arrest.

At the time of the incident, the woman was in a female holding cell within the jail's booking area.  There were no other inmates in the cell at the time.  During the initial medical screening, the woman gave no indication of suicidal intentions.

Deputies discovered the woman hanging in her cell at 8:45 pm.  Jail medical personnel were summoned immediately to provide medical assistance.  Acadian Ambulance was dispatched to the jail at 8:46 pm and arrived at 8:52 pm.  The woman was immediately transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital and turned over to hospital staff.

An internal review of the incident is on-going.
