City considers what to do with WTC site

Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

The city of New Orleans is moving closer to a final decision in the dispute over the World Trade Center. The big question now is whether to tear it down or renovate.

The World Trade Center is a prime piece of real estate on the riverfront in downtown New Orleans, and right now it sits empty. Despite previous attempts to revive the 33-story building as a hotel, the city is trying it again.

Competition, though, is heating up among three groups vying for the job. And just 24 hours before the selection committee is set to meet and rank the proposals, the non-profit Bureau of Governmental Research released a report on the bids.

BGR isn't taking a position on which proposal would be best, instead laying out the main points of each one.

Two of the proposals involve renovating the building and converting it into different types of residential and commercial property, including a hotel and luxury apartments. The third proposal involves tearing the building down and replacing the skyscraper with a park and huge monument.

The New Orleans Building Corporation actually owns the World Trade Center, while the city owns the land.

Tuesday's selection committee meeting will be open to the public and begins at 10 a.m.
