Firefighters battle three-alarm blaze in New Orleans East

Updated:

FOX 8 received this news release from the New Orleans Fire Dept. Tuesday afternoon:

Tuesday, July 02, 2013 at 3:09 in the afternoon, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched on a call reporting a dwelling on fire 6060 Boeing Dr. in New Orleans East. The first company arrived on the scene at 3:13 p.m. finding a two-story, unoccupied townhouse fully involved with connected exposures to the left and others in the rear of the initial fire building. The original fire building, at 6060 Boeing Dr., collapsed almost immediately upon arrival of NOFD suppression personnel, prompting a second alarm to be struck at 3:17 p.m. as first-in fire crews searched the connecting exposures for possible trapped victims. A subsequent third alarm was called for at 3:42 p.m. to bring in extra manpower to relieve first-in fire crews working in the mid-day heat.

The unoccupied townhouse where the fire began, which according to neighbors had been vacant and in a state of disrepair since hurricane Katrina, was completely destroyed. The most immediate exposure, located at 6054 Boeing, was also unoccupied and suffered heavy fire and smoke damage to its second floor and attic. A second occupied exposure located at 6048 Boeing suffered only smoke damage made possible by attic spaces between the dwellings having ineffective fire stops. Two more occupied exposures in the rear of original fire building received moderate damage to the exterior of the dwellings, as radiant heat scorched the facades burning wood and melting siding off the structures. Twenty-four units carrying sixty-five NOFD suppression personnel where used to bring this incident under control at 3:57 p.m. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. NOPD, NOEMS, Entergy and the American Red Cross were all on hand to assist in the mitigation of this incident.
