ULM researcher to study feral hog damage to marshes

Monroe, La. (AP) - University of Louisiana-Monroe professor Kim Marie Tolson has been awarded a grant by the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program to study the damage done by feral hogs in Louisiana's coastal marshes.

The $11,000 grant will allow Tolson's team to fly by helicopter over the marshes of Terrebonne Parish, where they will document and map damage inflicted by the rooting and wallowing behavior of feral hogs.

Tolson, a ULM professor of biology and graduate coordinator, says the number of wild pigs has increased during the past decade and they are a growing concern for land managers.
