N.O. firefighters mourn loss of their brothers

New Orleans, La. - With heavy hearts, members of the New Orleans Fire Department are leaning on each other as they mourn the loss of two of their brothers.

"It hurts a lot. It's only been a day and it hurts," says Capt. Robert Martory.

Early Sunday morning, off-duty firefighters 28-year-old Tommy Ashby and 27-year-old Scott Blanchard were involved in a single vehicle accident in Long Beach, Mississippi.

Ashby was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that ran off Highway 90 and struck a tree.

Blanchard was the front seat passenger. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

"They impacted so many peoples' lives," says firefighter Corey Mahl.

Blanchard worked in Fire House 37, while Ashby worked in Fire House 14.

Their brothers say they were best friends.

"Tommy and Scott had the biggest smiles on their faces at all times," says Firefighter Avery Blood.

"They didn't go anyway without each other. They were arm and arm growing up. They were best friends growing up and best friend died together," says Capt. Robert Martory.

Blanchard was engaged to be married. Ashby leaves behind a small child and a pregnant wife.

"We love him. We are going to miss him. I know his family misses him already. We just got a little fundraiser together and a lot of firemen are here to show their support for him," says Capt. Martory.

They gathered at Finn McCool's to "shake the boot" for Ashby and Blanchard. They want to give back to the loved ones of their fallen brothers, who they say served their community with dignity and honor.
