Man sentenced in fake cancer drug scheme

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A Montana man will serve no prison time for his role in distributing unapproved, misbranded and counterfeit drugs to U.S. physicians.

U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen on Friday sentenced 48-year-old Paul Bottomley to six months of house arrest and five years of probation after he pleaded guilty to not reporting a felony to authorities.

The Food and Drug Administration issued multiple warnings last year that a fake chemotherapy drug was sold to U.S. cancer clinics and hospitals.

An unknown amount of the counterfeit Roche drug Avastin has been administered to patients.

Canada Drugs Ltd. subsidiary Montana Health Care Solutions was an importer of the fake Avastin. Bottomley sold the Montana company to the Winnipeg Internet pharmaceutical company in 2010, but he stayed on as a $10,000-per-month adviser.
