Uptown fire district to lose Ladder 5

Updated:

New Orleans, La. - A rally was held Saturday to protest the decommissioning of Ladder 5 at Arabella Station. Residents and firefighters gathered at the corner of Magazine and Jefferson in a last-ditch effort to preserve the truck.

The decommissioning is due to the loss of federal aid that helped fund the New Orleans Fire Department. In an effort to balance the budget, the city said it will "redeploy" assets. The removal of Arabella's Ladder 5 and Ladder 3 at the station on Old Gentilly Road is part of that strategy.

Opponents at Saturday's rally said the loss of Ladder 5 leaves 1,300 acres of Uptown and 4,508 addresses without ladder truck protection. However, the mayor says the pump truck and firefighters at Arabella station can sufficiently respond to any call in less than 5 minutes.
