Children and driver hurt, man killed in Braithwaite car wreck

Braithwaite, La. - A single-vehicle crash killed a front-seat passenger and injured the driver and three children who were in the back seat, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop B.

The accident happened Saturday at 10:30 p.m. off LA Highway 39 near mile marker 36.3. The deceased is identified as Victor Major, 46, of Violet.

According to investigators, Samuel Hampton Jr., 38, of Violet, was speeding along LA 39 when his Camaro veered off the road into a ditch, causing the car to flip and hit a house. Hampton was taken to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center with moderate injuries. Police suspect he was intoxicated.

The children - ages 4, 10 and 11 - were also taken to the Trauma Center with moderate injuries.Their relationship to Hampton and Major is not known.

All of the survivors were wearing seatbelts. Major was not.

Criminal charges are pending against Hampton, and the crash remains under investigation.

Two people were in the home at the time of the crash; neither was injured. One of the residents, who asked not to be identified, said the crash was the most horrific thing she had ever seen. She said she took the children into her home as they waited for police, and described the children as "very brave."
