St. Tammany sets hearing on taxes

COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The St. Tammany Parish Council plans a public hearing Sept. 5 to consider increasing 13 different property taxes under parish government's jurisdiction.

Council administrator Donald Henderson tells The Times-Picayune the hearing is a precaution and he doesn't expect taxes to be raised.

The hearing will be at 6 p.m. at the parish government complex near Mandeville.

Government bodies that want to raise taxes must advertise their intentions by July 15, Henderson says. Because the assessor's office will not have a total assessed value for property in St. Tammany until in August, the parish scheduled the hearing on the millage rates as a safeguard, he said.

Henderson says it is unlikely that millages will be increased.
