Kenner reports Entergy bill phone scam

KENNER, La. (AP) - Kenner police are the latest to report a scam in which con artists apparently target Entergy electric customers.

In a Friday statement, police said there are multiple reports of people calling Kenner residents and telling them their electric bills are past due. The caller says service will be disconnected within an hour if they don't pay.

Sometimes, the person receiving the call is directed to transfer funds electronically; sometimes the person is directed to a number to purchase a credit card; sometimes the person is directed to a telephone number where people who answer say they are with the Entergy Disconnect Department and attempt to obtain personal credit information.

Entergy says it does sometimes place courtesy calls regarding past due bills but the recorded calls never demand immediate payment.
