JPSO: Suspect admits to killing 6 year-old girl

Harvey, La. - Matthew Flugence, 20, admitted to killing 6 year-old Ahlittia North over the weekend, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Her body was found early Tuesday morning inside a trash bin near her apartment.

In a press conference Wednesday morning, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand provided details surrounding Flugence's arrest. Flugence was taken into custody Tuesday night in Westwego after receiving tips from the public.

21 year-old Russell Flugence, the brother of Matthew Flugence, was also questioned regarding the killing and told officers he "didn't give a f*** about that little girl."

According to Normand, Flugence was armed with a knife when apprehended and later admitted that the knife was the murder weapon used to kill North on Saturday.

The toothbrush and blanket reported missing from the girl's apartment has also been recovered. Normand refused to discuss why Flugence killed North, but did say that there were no signs of forced entry in the apartment.

Normand thanked the public for providing details in helping to get Flugence off of the streets. He also stated that there are still many loose ends to tie up and that this arrest is a major milestone.

Matthew Flugence is also facing a charge of sexual battery involving an 11 year-old girl.

He is currently being held without bond.
