Fred Hickman: The Pelicans Briefs

New Orleans -- Most of the Pelicans have left Las Vegas in the rear view mirror, having completed play in the NBA Summer League.

Of course, head coach Monty Williams, along with players Ryan Anderson, Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis will stick around for the Team USA mini-camp which begins Monday.

Looking ahead to the Pelicans training camp, guys like Holiday are going to have to 'earn' their minutes in the backcourt. He along with another new addition, Tyreke Evans will be competing with Eric Gordon, Austin Rivers and Brian Roberts for time on the floor.

General manager Dell Demps says it's a nice problem to have.

"The league is so deep right now," said Demps. "Teams are sometimes going 8, 9 10 deep. You've got to be able to prepare for that. And, also, you have injuries. So, you want to get as much talent as you can. You want to get as many good players as you can. I'm kind of old school. You compete for time. You work for minutes. We personally believe that sometimes the best motivation is the bench."
