Mourners say goodbye to slain six-year-old girl

Gonzales, La. -

A large crowd of family and friends said goodbye Monday to 6-year-old Ahlittia North, who was murdered in Harvey last week.

With flowers and photographs surrounding Ahlittia's casket, loved ones gathered inside Christian Assembly Church in Gonzales, trying to make sense of the tremendous loss.

"It's in times like this that I realize how much about this world that I don't understand -- a lot of things I don't know. But I tell you what I do know, I know that Ahlittia is with Jesus," said Mary McMahan, principal at Donaldsonville Primary, where Ahlittia went to school.

McMahan and others recall a student with a vibrant personality.

"Beautiful child -- a great loss," said assistant principal Tennille Lang. "Beautiful smile. She always did the right things."

"She was a sweet girl. She was a great student. She was smart. She was well behaved. We loved her and we're gonna miss her and it's a terrible tragedy," McMahan said. "I cannot imagine the pain that her family is going through. I just pray that justice is served and that god will heal their hearts."

After a desperate search, Jefferson Parish authorities discovered North's body in a trash bin early last week. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed multiple times.

20-year-old Matthew Flugence is now charged with first-degree murder in connection with the crime.

Amid the grief and mourning Monday, loved ones also chose to celebrate Ahlittia's life, using words of positivity to begin the healing.

"She's happy now and in a better place and we're just glad this day turned out beautiful," said Brandi Comeaux, Ahlittia's cousin.

"Ahlittia, we're gonna miss you, sweetie. We're gonna miss your beautiful smile and your beautiful spirit, but we're gonna see you again," McMahan said.

Following the services in Gonzales, North was laid to rest at a cemetery in Donaldsonville.
