SW&B lifts Uptown boil water advisory

Updated:

The New Orleans Mayor's Office posted this update on its web site Wednesday afternoon:

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, in consultation with the State Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), has cancelled a boil water advisory for residents and businesses in a limited area of Uptown New Orleans bounded by South Carrollton Avenue from Maple Street to the river; Maple Street to Loyola Street; Loyola Street to Jackson Avenue and Jackson Avenue to the river.

The advisory was cancelled after the bacteriological tests confirmed that water in the area was safe to drink and could be used as normal for personal needs.

Customers are advised to flush their internal and external plumbing by running water through their systems.

The original advisory was issued on Tuesday, July 23 out of an abundance of caution by the Sewerage and Water Board in consultation with DHH. It was a result of a drop in water pressure caused by a break in a 30-inch water main in the 7800 block of Cohn Street that served the area.

SWB Executive Director, Marcia St. Martin, said, "We are pleased that the tests proved negative and that we can cancel the boil water advisory at this time. We issued the advisory in the best interest of our customers and with an abundance of caution to ensure their health and safety. I commend the work of Sewerage and Water Board (SWB) employees and the excellent cooperation of DHH officials. Customers in the affected area will be given a one-day credit on their water bills."
