Coroner's office financial takeover moving forward

MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) - St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister says the parish is moving forward to take over the coroner's office finances under a new law.

She says in a news release that the parish and coroner's office have moved its revenues into special accounts. Brister also said Thursday that they're working together to outline its obligations for the rest of the year so the parish can provide operating funds and debt service.

The FBI and state legislative auditor are investigating Peter Galvan, coroner since 2000. The investigations began after news reports about lavish spending and other questionable practices at the agency. The Parish Council and Brister have called for Galvan's resignation.

Galvan sued to stop the takeover. But parish spokesman Ronnie Simpson says the judge has not stopped it.
