Slidell, La. - A weekend car accident in the Dellwood subdivision claimed the life of a 29 year-old man and critically injured his 26 year-old passenger.
A spokesman with the Slidell Police Department says around 9:30pm Sunday, several area residents call 911 to report an overturned vehicle on Riviera Drive.
According to witnesses, a red Dodge Durango was at the dead end of Riviera Drive and began speeding towards Nassau Drive.
The driver of the Durango didn't stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Riviera Drive and Nassau Drive; striking a red Chevrolet Malibu.
The Malibu was struck on the front passenger-side by the Durango, which was estimated to be traveling around 60 miles per hour. The speed limit in the neighborhood is 20 miles per hour. The impact caused the Durango to overturn and strike a utility pole; trapping both the driver and the passenger.
The crash killed the driver of the Durango, who was identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jones of Harahan.
The passenger was identified as 26-year-old Brandon Tarto of Chalmette.
Rescue crews with St. Tammany Fire District One, Slidell Police Department, Cleco, and Acadian Ambulance worked for over two hours to extricate Tarto from the vehicle. Tarto, who is listed in critical condition, was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans.
The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was identified as 53-year-old Sandra Cosse and the passenger as 21-year-old Ryan Cosse. Both occupants were transported to local hospitals in Slidell with minor injuries, and have since been released. Ms. Cosse was not cited and did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but as standard procedure requires, toxicology results are pending.
The driver of the Dodge Durango, Joshua Jones, is listed to be at fault in the crash. Impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor, but toxicology results are pending.
