Shots fired inside Covington law firm; suspect commits suicide

Covington, La. - At least 20 shots were fired at a Covington law firm, according to a spokesman with the Covington Police Department.

It happened Tuesday afternoon at 816 N. Colombia Street at the Upton Law Firm.

FOX 8 received this news release from Covington police Tuesday evening:

At approximately 1:15 PM on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 the Covington Police Department received several 911 calls in reference to an active shooter at a lawyer's office at 816 North Columbia St.

Covington Officers arrived on the scene almost immediately accompanied by Deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. They responded to an active shooter and cleared the office. During their sweep of the building they found the office manager hiding. They also found a 47 year old white male with a gunshot wound. The Coroner's Office arrived and told Officers that the gunshot wound was self inflicted.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Crime Lab was asked to help Covington Detectives process the scene. At the time of this report Detectives have recovered two .22 caliber semi-automatic pistols with several empty magazines, and two 9MM semi-automatic handguns. Approximately 60 empty cartridge cases were recovered at the scene.

At approximately 1:15 PM the suspect Roderick Rist, 47 years of age, parked his 2012 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck in front of the lawyer's office. The office door was locked and he could not gain entry. Apparently he fired enough rounds through the glass door to shatter it and make entry. The Office Manager used this time to find a hiding place. Officers and Deputies arrived and cleared the building and found the woman employee hiding. Mr. Rist after finding no one in the office began shooting at everything in the building. At some point he turned one of the guns on himself. At the time of this release Covington Detectives and St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Crime Lab Personnel are still processing the crime scene.

Mr. Rist has been residing in Slidell.
