FBI says agent shot suspect at N.O. East motel

New Orleans, La. - Federal authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an FBI special agent at a New Orleans East motel.

It happened Tuesday afternoon at the Studio 6 at Bullard and Interstate 10. New Orleans police initially responded to a call of an officer in need of assistance/life in danger.  Several law enforcement officials rushed to the shooting scene.

The FBI office in New Orleans released this brief statement to news media Tuesday night:

This afternoon, an FBI Special Agent from the New Orleans field office shot and killed a suspect while performing his official duties. The agent was part of a task force conducting a surveillance operation as part of an ongoing investigation involving drug-related activity. The suspect was a black male, approximately 30 years of age. An autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning to confirm the official cause of death.

This investigation is being led by the FBI, including both the Inspection Division from Washington, D.C. and the local field office. The Louisiana State Police is managing the scene. The Louisiana State Police and the NOPD are assisting in other matters related to the investigation. While the internal investigation is being conducted, the special agent remains on duty.

Both State Police and NOPD are referring all questions about the shooting to the FBI.
