Houma man dies of heroin overdose; dealer taken into custody

Updated:

Houma, La. - Terrebonne Parish sheriff's deputies have arrested an alleged drug dealer and a woman after her boyfriend died from an apparent heroin overdose.

Dvon Smith, 35, and Tamara Duthu, 33, both face a second degree murder and drug charges.

Investigators say Duthu bought heroin at the request of her boyfriend, 33 year-old Joshua Boudreaux.

Around 11:00 Tuesday night, she discovered Boudreaux dead after the two fell asleep where he worked in Houma.

Deputies say she then called authorities.

Smith and Duthu were arrested Wednesday morning.

"The way that the statute reads is that if you are directly responsible with distributing an illegal narcotics substance to a subject, with or without their knowledge and that ultimately causes their death, then you are responsible for that and it falls under a second degree murder charge,' says Captain Dawn Foret of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say Smith claimed he mixed the heroin with some unknown substance.  An autopsy and toxicology tests are being performed to determine what was in the drugs.
