Suicidal man threatens police in Kenner

Kenner, La. - SWAT team members responded to the scene of a disturbance at a Kenner apartment complex where a suicidal man claimed to be armed and threatened to harm police.

Police were called to the scene at the Sunlake Apartments in the 800 block of Joe Yenni Boulevard Wednesday at about 4:20 p.m., according to Kenner Police Sgt. Brian McGregor.

"He made some threats that if the police came into his apartment he would shoot the police officer," McGregor said. "So out of an abundance of caution, we have the Kenner police SWAT team here on the scene at this time. We are communicating with that individual trying to get him out of the apartment and try and get him the medical attention and care that he needs."

Adjacent individual apartment units were evacuated, McGregor said.

The man, who has not been identified, told police that he is a 58-year-old Vietnam veteran.
