New Orleans, La. - City leaders celebrated a milestone Wednesday in the redevelopment of a once-blighted commercial corridor.

The Mid-City Market welcomed the opening of its anchor store, a new Winn Dixie supermarket near the corner of North Carrollton and Bienville.

Other businesses that have opened or will open soon include Panera Bread, Pei Wei restaurant, Office Depot, Pizza Hut, Jefferson Feed and Seed, and an Ochsner Urgent Care clinic.

Economic development leaders in New Orleans expect the Mid-City Market to create at least 500 permanent jobs.

Councilwoman Susan Guidry noted that people from nine neighborhoods will eventually be able to bike or walk to the shopping center once the adjacent "Lafitte Greenway" is completed.

Construction on the linear park is expected to start in the fall.
