Louisiana reports 2 cases of stomach bug linked to national outbreak

Centers for Disease Control Centers for Disease Control

Baton Rouge, La. - The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has confirmed two cases of Cyclospora in Louisiana this week, one in Bienville Parish and one in Terrebonne Parish, according to DHH Public Information Officer Ken Pastorick.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People can become infected with Cyclospora by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, and those with the illness may have flu-like symptoms, diarrhea and nausea.

Pastorick said DHH has been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control to share information about the case, as the federal government is investigating a Cyclospora outbreak. People who believe they have the illness should see their doctors immediately, Pastorick said.

People should take extra caution to thoroughly wash all produce before eating it.
