St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Watson St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Watson

Luling, La. - A St. Charles Parish Sheriff's deputy died following a car crash in Luling. The accident occurred Sunday around 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of Paul Maillard Road and Post Drive. The deputy has been identified as Jeff Watson, a 12-year veteran of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to a Louisiana State Police spokesperson, Watson was traveling in a marked police car, north-bound on Paul Maillard Road, responding to a call. As Watson approached Post Drive, a pickup truck pulled out in front of him. Watson swerved to miss truck, but side-swiped the pickup causing Watson to lose control of his car. His vehicle then struck a south-bound SUV, head-on. Following that collision, the SUV was struck from behind by a motorcycle that was also traveling south-bound.

The driver of the SUV was transported to University Hospital with critical injuries. The drivers of the motorcycle and pickup truck only received minor injuries. Watson was pronounced dead on the scene.

Through their investigation, detectives determined that Watson did not have his seat belt on at the time of the crash. Investigators also determined that speed was a factor in this crash.
