Saints sign WR Steve Breaston

Updated:

The Saints are battling the injury bug at wide receiver, so they turned to veteran Steve Breaston for help. Breaston signed a one-year deal with the club on Monday.

"Breaston's a guy that's got experience, can run and he's had a lot of snaps in this league. His workout went well. We will see how it goes," said head coach Sean Payton.

"I'm grateful they gave me the opportunity," said Breaston. "I just got to go out here and learn the playbook and keep working hard."

Breaston is entering his seventh year in the NFL. In 2008, he had his only 1000-yard season. That same year, his Arizona Cardinals made the Super Bowl.

Last year his injured his knee, was released by the Chiefs and had been working out for teams all offseason. His session with the Saints finally got him a contract.

"When it comes to workouts, it's one and done," said Breaston. "When you get your chance you have to get out there and run routes and do a number of things and make the best of it."

The Saints need Breaston now, with Andy Tanner and Joe Morgan sidelined. Morgan's injury could be more severe. Payton said he is seeking a second opinion on his knee.
