Heat advisory issued; heat index near 108 degrees

New Orleans, La. - The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Heat index values in excess of 105 degrees and as high as 108 degrees are expected this afternoon and this evening for several hours across the area.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Not much rain is in the forecast for the next several days. Computer models had indicated a wave traveling across the Gulf could increase rain chances by Thursday and Friday. Another wave is forecasted to arrive this weekend, but we'll need to wait and see if it materializes.
