Laplace, La. - One year ago today, two St. John Parish sheriff's deputies were ambushed and killed in Laplace.

Friday, the community gathered to remember deputies Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche.

The community is still trying to deal with the tragedy of having two deputies killed and two others wounded on the same day.

Balloons were released by the sheriff, his deputies, and neighboring law enforcement and family members outside The New Wine Church on Airline Highway.

It was there where dozens of people took part in a special remembrance ceremony for deputies Neilsen and Triche.

"I'm not surprised. They've been here for us throughout this whole ordeal and they're here for us today. It's a wonderful ceremony and all part of the healing process," said Sheriff Mike Tregre.

Those in attendance also recognized the two deputies who survived the ambush on August 16th 2012.

Authorities say some of the suspects are tied to an extremist group.

Three men await trial in the murders.

Three other suspects who are charged with being accessories after the fact have pleaded guilty.
