Metairie, La. - Concerned property owners in Jefferson Parish will soon be able to learn more about controversial FEMA flood maps.
Wednesday, August 21 will mark the first in a series of all-day "open houses," aimed at helping the public understand the potential impacts.
Jefferson Parish leaders urge property owners to attend, so they can get answers about the proposals. The preliminary maps have many in Jefferson parish and elsewhere worried about skyrocketing insurance rates. FEMA opened the 90 day comment and appeal period for the proposed Jefferson Parish Flood Insurance Rate Maps on July 3, 2013, and will end on September 30, 2013.
The first open house starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Delta Playground, Room #3. Computer stations for viewing the maps will be available with the assistance of the LSUAg Center, FEMA, UNO, and local municipalities. Comment forms also will be available for individuals who would like to appeal or protest the proposed FEMA map for their area. Delta playground is located at 8301 West Metairie Avenue.
The open house hours are from 10am- 8pm. Similar open houses will take place later this month:
