Delgado-Slidell students shaken up after car plows into classroom

The first day of class for a group of psychology students at Delgado's Slidell campus took an unbelievable turn of events.

"The teacher had just gotten to the class and introduced himself, and I mean all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it was like a bomb exploded or something," said student Dean Long.

It was actually a car, plowing into the classroom wall where Long and fellow student Kelsey Brennan were sitting Tuesday.

"I look back, I see the wall tearing out behind me, and next thing I know I'm flying forward. The girl sitting behind me is still in her desk flying forward. And she was launched," Long said. "She's still sitting in [her chair] upright, feet facing the ceiling, head and back on the ground. And I'm plowed right into her."

Making things worse, Long was sitting in a wheelchair at the time because of severe injuries he suffered during another car accident recently. Tuesday was also his birthday.

Brennan was already weak after having her appendix removed last Thursday.

"It just scared me," Brennan said. "I thought I was gonna die and I'm across the room at least 12 feet away, on my back, and I open my eyes and I see part of the car through the building. I was coughing up sheet rock. It was all over me."

Both Brennan and Long went to the hospital but, fortunately, both were released and are doing better.

Authorities blamed a vehicle malfunction for the crash, although they didn't say exactly went wrong. The driver, who was also hospitalized with minor injuries, is not being cited.

The students said it was a situation that could have been much worse, but also a chaotic first day of class, nonetheless.

"I've never been in a serious, traumatic event and this is definitely something I will not forget," Brennan said.

"It's gonna make for some interesting discussion in psychology this semester to say the least, and I don't think anybody in that classroom is gonna sit by the wall again," Long said with a laugh.
