Gentilly residents give input on Mayor's upcoming budget

New Orleans, La. - Gentilly residents got their chance to talk priorities with Mayor Mitch Landrieu as the administration looks for input in next year's budget.

Dozens of people attended the meeting Monday night. One of the top questions for the Mayor had to deal with blight in the area.

One resident told Landrieu, "I know that there's a lot of absentee landlords in our communities that are not taking care of their property, and I would like to see the city take care of that also. Put fines on 'em, make it heavy on 'em. Take it away from them."

Other residents described progress they've seen, but also lingering problems and opportunities, such as the Lake Terrace Shopping Center.

Constantine Venice of Lake Terrace told the Mayor, "We're dealing with a developer here that's looking for a free lunch. I'm glad you stopped that free lunch. I commend you for that but you need to follow through and see it through.  This is one of the most viable pieces of property and you fix this and everything's coming back."

The Mayor's next community budget meeting will take place Wednesday night in District B at the Kipp Central City Academy on Third street.
