NOPD getting 100 new cars

New Orleans, La. - The City of New Orleans has confirmed that the first of 100 new police cars has begun arriving in the city.  The new cars include 80 Ford Explorer SUV's and 20 Ford Taurus sedans.

The first of the new cars began arriving this week.  It's expected the city will continue to receive shipments over the next several weeks with all of the new cars on the streets of the city by November.

The cars and SUV's will replace an aging fleet of NOPD cars.  Most of the new cars will be used by officers on patrol, although some have been assigned to the NOPD's undercover officers.

The money for the new cars comes out of the budget promised last year by Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who also set aside funds to equip cars with cameras.
