New Orleans, La. - Drivers who use the Judge Seeber Bridge will have to find an alternative way across the Industrial Canal for at least another month and a half.

The state highway department extended the bridge's closure through mid-October. The bridge has been closed since August 2nd for painting.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development had initially planned to reopen the bridge on August 24th. It issued the first closure extension last week when it said the bridge would reopen after Labor Day. At that time, the state said recent rain had delayed the cleaning and painting work on the bridge's west tower.

Now the DOTD says it just learned, "a substantial amount of equipment will be required to be staged on the bridge in order for the contractor to perform painting activities. The extra activity on the bridge prompted DOTD to reconsider the decision to keep the bridge open to vehicular traffic during the painting operations to ensure the safety of motorists."

The DOTD says it will monitor the project to determine if the bridge needs to be closed even longer or if limited vehicular traffic can be accommodated in the future.

Alternate routes across the Industrial canal include the bridges at St. Claude Avenue and Florida Avenue.
