Few tips about murder of toddler in Central City

Updated:

New Orleans, La. - In the more than 48 hours since the murder of Londyn Samuels, only three calls have come into Crimestoppers.

"We're not seeing anything near what we typically see," says Crimestoppers GNO President Darlene Cusanza. "We've had very few tips come through, last night we had little information come through after all the media coverage and that's very disheartening."

New Orleans Police released surveillance images Friday, identifying two men seen as persons of interest.

The pictures were taken Thursday night near Saratoga and Washington where an 18-year old babysitter walked with one-year-old Londyn.

Police say the teen was shot in the back and a bullet hit and killed the toddler.

Investigators don't think the two were caught in crossfire.

Tulane University criminologist Peter Scharf says this murder, unlike the killings of Briana Allen, Keira Holmes and Jeremy Galmon, has an even more heinous nature.

"This was what we're seeing too often, an assassination," he says. "There wasn't a lot of people that could be confused in this situation with Londyn."

In the shooting deaths of the other three children, more tips came into Crimestoppers.

"I know with Jeremy Galmon a couple years ago, we had multiple tips coming from the community," says Cusanza. "The other thing we had was we had a multiple outcry from the community wanting to raise a reward. Neither things have happened in this case."

The memorial here on Saratoga continues to grow showing how much people in this neighborhood care, but Scharf says the problem is getting them to come forward when there's so much fear.

Saturday afternoon, just three blocks from where Londyn died, witnesses say someone fired shots.

New Orleans Police investigated but haven't released any details.

"This is becoming fear city," says Scharf. "The nature of the assaults, the beating up of the couple in the French Quarter, people don't feel safe."

Even more reason, says Cusanza, to turn in those responsible for this shooting.

"When you talk about someone who shot a woman carrying a child, it would be much better for you to make the phone call and give us the information that we need than to allow this person to possibly hurt somebody else," she says.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111. Callers can remain anonymous.

There's a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
